Guerlain Santal Pao Rosa
Santal Pao Rosa by Guerlain Eau de Parfum
Pao Rosa Eau de Parfum is a Brazilian rosewood a tree so heavily harvested for its essential oil that it became endangered, and its use in perfumery largely disappeared. Guerlain's Santal Pao Rosa, launched in 2021, takes that name and builds something around the idea of rare, precious wood: warm, resinous, and unhurried.
Created by perfumer Delphine Jelk, this is a unisex fragrance from Guerlain's Les Absolus d'Orient collection a line dedicated to the richest, most concentrated materials in perfumery. It's built around a core of sandalwood and agarwood (oud), two of the most valued woods in the world, layered with cardamom, myrrh, fig, and nutty notes.
The cardamom opens things up with a warm, slightly smoky spice that sets the tone immediately this is not a light fragrance. The sandalwood and oud form the structural heart: creamy and dense from the sandalwood, dark and slightly animalic from the oud. Myrrh adds a dry, balsamic resin that deepens the whole composition, while fig brings an unexpected softness milky and slightly green, cutting through the heaviness just enough. The nutty notes round out the base with a quiet, almost edible warmth.
Santal Pao Rosa wears close to the skin and lasts. It's the kind of fragrance that rewards patience it takes time to fully open, and it's better for it.
